José Pereira de Sousa

In 1986 he completed his degree in ‘cello playing at the Oporto Music Conservatory where he received the highest marks. He attended Master Classes with Charles Medlan, Luís Legia, Paul Tortelier, Alberto Lysi and Maurice Raskin, participating in both ‘cello and chamber music. He received the Gulbenkian and Suggia prizes, among other awards and honours. He has played with the following Orchestras - R.D.P. (Oporto and Lisbon), Camerata do Porto, Oporto Classic Orchestra and Manchester Camerata, under various conductors, including Ivo Cruz, Augusto Pereira de Sousa, Erold Erdinc and Omri Hadari. He was cellist soloist with the following orchestras - Camerata do Porto, Régie Sinfonia, Oporto Classic Orchestra, Greek youth Orchestra, Orchestra Festival Les Arcs, European Community youth Orchestra and the World Orchestra. He is deeply involved in chamber music, playing and directing various groups; with the Suggia Quartet and Kora Ensemble. He is Artístic Director of the Soloists of Oporto. He has made numerous recordings for R.D.P., R.T.P., and has made several discs under the “Numerica” Label. His large repertoire includes several first performances of Claudio Carneyro's Sonatina – recently published and edited by José Pereira de Sousa. Apart from national concerts at the highest level, he has frequently been invited tho play in France, Germany, Italy and Brazil. Presently he is first ‘cello of the Oporto National Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the Jean Piaget Orchestra. He is professor of ‘cello and chamber music at Aveiro University. The cello “Cavalieri”, with which he plays, once belonged to the remarkable cellist Guilhermina Suggia and has been kindly given to him by the luthier A. Capela.
